The shape of the sign
The ninth house is the far world: belief, higher study, long journeys, the frame you interpret everything else through. Sagittarius is that territory as a temperament — the conviction that there is more, elsewhere, and that going to look is a reasonable use of a life.
Jupiter rules it, the planet of expansion, and expansion is a neutral word doing a lot of work. It means generosity, optimism, scale and appetite for the large view. It also means overreach, because nothing in Jupiter's nature suggests a stopping point. Sagittarius is the sign most likely to promise more than exists and to mean every word at the time.
It is mutable fire, which makes it the most restless of the fire signs and the least fixed on any one object. Aries wants to start, Leo wants to sustain, Sagittarius wants to move on — and it does, cheerfully, often before anybody has finished the conversation.
Its honesty is the trait most often praised and least often examined. Sagittarius says the true thing, at the wrong moment, without malice and without much interest in the aftermath, and then is genuinely puzzled that anyone minded. The bluntness is not cruelty. It is a failure to model the impact, which is not the same thing and is not much better.
When it is working, and when it is not
Working
Enlarging. A Sagittarius in good form makes your problem look smaller and your options look bigger, which is occasionally exactly what is needed and is dispensed here for free. It is the sign least interested in status and most willing to take a stranger seriously, and it will tell you the truth when everyone else has decided not to.
Not working
Conviction without homework. Certainty offered at volume on a subject encountered last week, promises made in enthusiasm and abandoned without a note, and a talent for leaving that is described as freedom by the one leaving and as something else by everyone left. Restlessness is a real answer to a bad situation and a poor answer to a difficult one.

Where Sagittarius actually is

Nobody sees an archer. What everybody sees, once told, is the Teapot — a lid, a body, a spout on the western side and a handle on the eastern, formed by the brightest eight stars. It is the single most useful asterism in the summer sky.
Steam appears to rise from the spout, and it is the Milky Way, at its densest and brightest anywhere in the sky. That is not a coincidence of perspective. It is the direction of the galactic centre.
About 26,000 light years beyond the spout lies Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way — roughly four million times the mass of the Sun, and imaged for the first time in 2022. Everything in the galaxy, including this planet and everyone reading this, is going around it.
The December solstice point currently sits in these stars, which is why the Sun reaches its southern limit while crossing Sagittarius — even though the tropic on the map is still named for Capricorn, where the point was two thousand years ago.

You are met as open, direct and hard to offend, and as somebody who might not be here next year. People tell you things quickly, partly because you seem unshockable and partly because you seem temporary.
