Eight phases,
one angle.

The Moon does not change shape. What changes is the angle we are looking at it from — and every one of the eight named phases is a slice of that single number.

Why the Moon has phases at all

Half the Moon is always lit, because it is a sphere next to a star. What varies is how much of the lit half is turned towards us, and that depends entirely on where the Moon is in its orbit relative to the Sun — the angle astronomers call the elongation.

At 0° the Moon sits in the Sun's direction and its lit face points away from us. At 180° it sits opposite and the lit face is towards us. The illuminated fraction is a clean function of the angle, and the boundary between light and dark on the disc — the terminator — is a circle seen at an angle, which is why it is an ellipse and not a crescent-shaped arc.

The Earth's shadow has nothing to do with any of it. That is the single most common misconception about the Moon, and the Earth's shadow does reach the Moon occasionally — that is a lunar eclipse, and it happens two or three times a year rather than monthly.

The cycle takes 29.53 days, and that is not the Moon's orbit

The Moon goes round the Earth in 27.32 days — the sidereal month, measured against the stars. But in that time the Earth has moved along its own orbit, so the Moon needs about two more days to catch up with the Sun's new direction. That longer period, 29.53 days, is the synodic month, and it is the one the phases follow.

Almost every calendar problem in human history comes out of the gap between that number and the 365.24-day year. Twelve synodic months are eleven days short of a solar year, which is why the Chinese calendar needs a leap month roughly every third year, why the Islamic calendar drifts through the seasons, and why Easter moves.

Each phase, and what it is read as

Four of the eight are instants — new, first quarter, full, last quarter — that a whole day gets named after. The other four are the stretches between them. The astronomy is checkable; the reading beside it is symbolic tradition, and the two are kept apart here deliberately.

New Moon

What it is. The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, so the face turned towards us is the unlit one. It rises and sets with the Sun and is invisible — except at the few new moons that fall close enough to the ecliptic to eclipse it.

What it is read as. Potential that has not shown itself. The traditional reading is a temperament that starts things privately and reveals them late, and it is the one phase with nothing to look at, which is the whole image.

Waxing Crescent

What it is. A thin lit edge, visible low in the west just after sunset. The dark part is often faintly visible too — earthshine, sunlight reflected off the Earth onto the Moon and back.

What it is read as. Intention that has just become visible: the point at which something decided in private becomes something other people can see, and argue with.

First Quarter

What it is. Exactly half the disc is lit and the terminator is a straight line. It is called a quarter because the Moon has completed a quarter of its cycle, not because a quarter is lit — the commonest confusion about the whole sequence.

What it is read as. The crisis in action: the moment a plan meets the first thing that resists it. A temperament that grows by pushing against something.

Waxing Gibbous

What it is. Past half and filling. Gibbous is from the Latin for humpbacked, and it is the longest-lasting shape in the cycle because the illuminated fraction changes slowest near full.

What it is read as. Refinement under pressure. Everything is almost there and the remaining work is all adjustment, which is either the most satisfying part or the most maddening.

Full Moon

What it is. The Moon is opposite the Sun, rises as the Sun sets, and is lit face-on — which is why a full moon looks flat rather than round: with the light directly behind us there are no shadows to give the craters depth.

What it is read as. Everything visible at once and nothing in shadow, with the two lights pulling from opposite ends. The classic reading of an opposition applies.

Waning Gibbous

What it is. Past full and emptying, rising after sunset and still up at dawn. The lit side has swapped: what was bright on the right is now bright on the left, seen from the northern hemisphere.

What it is read as. Traditionally the disseminating moon — the phase of telling people what you learned. A temperament that arrives at an understanding and cannot leave it alone.

Last Quarter

What it is. Half lit again, the other half. It rises around midnight and is highest at dawn, which is why it is the phase most people have never knowingly seen.

What it is read as. The crisis in consciousness rather than in action: the point at which something that worked stops making sense, before there is anything to replace it with.

Waning Crescent

What it is. The last sliver, visible low in the east just before sunrise. Earthshine returns, and the old moon is often visible in the new moon's arms.

What it is read as. The balsamic moon, and the oldest of the eight: a temperament that arrives already knowing how something ends — which is either wisdom or a difficulty starting.

Where the "soulmate moon" came from

Since about 2022 a format has circulated widely: lay two people's birth moons side by side, and if the lit halves close into a full circle they are soulmates. It is worth being precise about it, because it is now the commonest thing anybody asks a moon phase calculator.

The arithmetic is real. Two phases close into a circle when their elongations sum to a full turn — one waxing, one waning, at mirror distances from new. That is a genuine geometric relationship and the calculator on this site reports it.

The tradition is not real. No astrological text before this decade mentions the arrangement, it has no basis in Hellenistic, Vedic or Chinese practice, and it appears to have been invented on social media. That does not make it worthless — it is a pleasant thing to look at and a good conversation — but a site that presents a four-year-old internet game as ancient wisdom is not being straight with anybody.

Reading the Moon properly

The phase is one fact about the Moon and the coarsest one. A full reading places it by sign, by house and by its angles to everything else, which is a birth chart rather than a phase — the method page says where this site stops. The Indian tradition asks a different question again: which of the twenty-seven lunar mansions the Moon stood in, which is a much finer division than the twelve signs.
