The shape of the sign
Capricorn begins at the December solstice — the shortest day, the bottom of the year, the point at which the light starts coming back. That is the sign's exact temperament: it starts from the assumption that conditions are hard, and it works anyway, because the light returning is a matter of time and time is the one resource it takes seriously.
Saturn rules it, and Saturn is the planet of limit. Not punishment, though the tradition often reads it that way — limit. The wall, the deadline, the finite budget, the fact that you are one person. Capricorn is the sign that treats those as the working conditions rather than as an injustice, and that is where its enormous competence comes from.
It is cardinal, so it initiates, and what it initiates is structure. Where Aries starts an action and Cancer starts a protection, Capricorn starts something with a foundation under it — an institution, a career, a family line, a body of work. The sign's timescale is longer than the others', which is why it often looks slow to people measuring in months.
Its unglamorous truth is deferral. Capricorn postpones the enjoyment, and it is genuinely good at postponing, and that skill can outlive its usefulness by decades. The classic Capricorn discovery, arriving late, is that the summit was a place to stand rather than a place to live.
When it is working, and when it is not
Working
The one who actually finishes. Capricorn carries responsibility without narrating the weight, builds things that are still standing long after the enthusiasm has gone, and is unimpressed by hierarchy while being extremely good at operating inside one. Its dry humour is one of the best-kept secrets on the wheel.
Not working
Worth measured entirely in output, and the output never sufficient. Warmth deferred to a later date that does not arrive, other people's difficulty assessed as a failure of discipline, and a hardness turned first on the self and then, inevitably, outward. Control mistaken for responsibility.

Where Capricorn actually is

Capricornus is old — one of the oldest figures we can trace, a Babylonian goat-fish long before the Greeks got it — and it is faint. There is no bright star in it at all: Deneb Algedi, the brightest, is magnitude 2.85, and the shape is a broad shallow triangle that takes patience to pick out.
Algedi, which carries the alpha, is not one star but two unrelated ones that happen to lie in almost the same direction — about 690 and 100 light years away respectively. Sharp eyes can split them without any instrument, which makes it one of the classic naked-eye tests.
The sea-goat itself is a strange image that has survived four thousand years unchanged: the front half of a goat, the tail of a fish. It is associated with Ea, the Mesopotamian god of fresh water and wisdom, and the hybrid is the point — a creature that works in two elements.
The December solstice sat here when the sign was fixed, which is why the southern limit of the Sun's travel is still called the Tropic of Capricorn on every map printed today. The Sun now reaches that limit while it is crossing Sagittarius. The line kept the name; the stars moved on.
