The ideomotor effect

Your hand moves
and you do not feel it.

A pendulum that answers questions, a dowsing rod that dips over water, a planchette that spells. One mechanism explains all three, it was demonstrated in the 1830s, and the demonstration is something you can repeat at a kitchen table.

Chevreul steadied his own hand

The chemist Michel-Eugène Chevreul spent years on the pendulum question and reported the decisive experiment in the 1830s. A pendulum held over a target swings. Rest the wrist on a support so the hand genuinely cannot move, and the swing stops. Remove the support and it starts again.

Then the sharper version: blindfold the holder, or hide the target, and the pendulum no longer knows what to do. It swings when the person knows what the answer is supposed to be, and not otherwise.

The movement is real. It is made by muscles. What is missing is the sense of having made it.

Carpenter named it, Faraday caught the table

William Benjamin Carpenter proposed the term ideo-motor in 1852 for exactly this: an idea producing a muscular action without the intention that normally accompanies one. The following year Michael Faraday tested the fashionable craze of table-turning with a simple apparatus — a light board resting on rollers on the tabletop, so that any sideways push would displace the board before the table moved.

The board moved first, every time. The sitters were pushing, and were sincerely astonished to be told so.

That sincerity is the whole point and it is why the effect keeps working. Nobody at Faraday's table was lying.

The same mechanism, three costumes

Where this stops being a parlour trick

In the late 1980s and 1990s a technique called facilitated communication spread through schools and clinics: a facilitator supported the hand of a non-speaking person, who then appeared to type fluent messages. Controlled tests — where the facilitator and the person were shown different pictures — found the messages described what the facilitator had seen.

The facilitators were not frauds. They were experiencing exactly what Faraday's sitters experienced, and the consequences included families torn apart by accusations that had been typed by the wrong hand.

That is the reason this page exists on a site about symbolic readings. The ideomotor effect is not a curiosity. It is the mechanism by which a sincere person can produce an answer, believe it came from elsewhere, and act on it.

How to tell, in one evening

Any of these can be tested at home, and the test is always the same shape: remove the operator's knowledge of the answer, and see whether the device still performs.

  1. Have somebody else place the target — a coin under one of five cups — while you are out of the room.
  2. Run the pendulum, or the rods, without ever learning which cup it is.
  3. Record every attempt, including the ones you would have dismissed as “not concentrating properly”. That rule is the experiment.
  4. Twenty trials at one in five is four hits by luck alone. You need considerably more than four to have found anything.

Recording the failures is the part people skip, and it is the only part that makes the result mean anything.

Why there is no pendulum tool on this site

Because it would have to be dishonest. Every tool here is a calculation whose inputs and method are published: the angle between two Sun signs, the Sun-Moon elongation, a lunar new year computed from a solstice. A pendulum tool would either return a number from a random generator dressed as an answer, or it would fake the physics of somebody else's hand.
