The shape of the sign
Pisces closes the zodiac, and everything about it follows from being last. It is the sign in which the separations established by the previous eleven begin to come apart — between self and other, between what happened and what was imagined, between compassion and being unable to look away. The twelfth house is retreat, institutions, the unconscious: what is behind you and what you cannot see yourself doing.
Jupiter is its traditional ruler, which gives the sign a generosity and a largeness that the modern reading tends to lose. Neptune, added after 1846, supplies the dissolution — imagination, longing and self-deception, which are one faculty pointed in three directions and cannot be separated as neatly as anybody would like.
Permeability is the accurate word for its central trait. A Pisces takes on the emotional state of a room without deciding to, which is where the empathy comes from and where the exhaustion comes from, and the lifelong work is telling which of the feelings currently in progress actually belong to it.
It is mutable, and it adapts by taking the shape of whatever it is in. That produces genuine artistic range and the sign's most reliable failure: an edge has to be constructed deliberately here, because none is issued as standard, and a Pisces without one will be shaped entirely by whoever is nearest.
When it is working, and when it is not
Working
Unusually kind, and kind in a way that is not performed. Pisces gives people room, forgives things that were genuinely costly, and sees the version of somebody that they have not managed to be yet. Its imagination is not decoration — it is the sign's actual instrument, and it produces a disproportionate share of the art anybody bothers to keep.
Not working
Escape sold as depth. The difficult conversation avoided, the commitment left deliberately vague, a martyrdom that nobody asked for and cannot be declined, and a version of events that has been softened so many times that the original is no longer recoverable. Boundaries collapse and are then resented from the inside.

Where Pisces actually is

Pisces is faint, sprawling and almost never picked out on purpose. Its brightest star is only magnitude 3.6, and the figure — two fish tied together by their tails — covers a large area of empty-looking sky.
The one shape worth learning is the Circlet, a small ring of five faint stars marking the western fish's head. It sits just below the Great Square of Pegasus, which is how anybody ever finds it.
The two fish meet at Alrescha, whose name is simply the Arabic for “the cord”. It is a close double star, two hot white stars orbiting each other over a period of centuries.
And here is why this dim constellation matters more than any other. The March equinox point currently lies in Pisces — the zero of the tropical zodiac, the point still formally called the First Point of Aries. It slid backwards out of the constellation Aries around the second century BCE and has been in these stars ever since.
It will leave. When it crosses into Aquarius, sometime in the next few centuries depending on which boundary you accept, that will be the astronomical event the phrase “the Age of Aquarius” actually refers to. Pisces has held the equinox for the whole of the common era, which is a considerable career for a constellation nobody can find.

Reading Pisces beside another sign
Virgo, the opposite, is the same sensitivity with the sorting instinct switched on — the sign that dissolves against the sign that separates, and each holds the faculty the other is missing. The squares to Gemini and Sagittarius are the frustrating ones: both want the feeling put into words and moved past, which is precisely the operation Pisces cannot perform on demand.
