The shape of the sign
The zodiac turns at Libra. The first six signs are about the formation of a self; the second six are about that self meeting the world, and Libra is the hinge. It begins at the autumn equinox, the second moment in the year when day and night are exactly equal, which is as literal as symbolism ever gets.
Venus rules it in the social mode. Where Taurus's Venus is about the object, Libra's is about the relation: the space between two people, whether it is comfortable, whether it is fair. This produces real social intelligence — Libra reads a room accurately and fast — and it produces the sign's characteristic difficulty, which is answering a question about its own preference when there is nobody present to balance against.
It is cardinal, and that surprises people who read it as passive. Libra initiates constantly; what it initiates is contact. It is the sign that starts the conversation, arranges the meeting, proposes the terms. The action is real even though it never looks like force.
The famous indecision is not weakness of will. It is the direct consequence of being able to see both cases properly. A Libra deciding slowly is usually a Libra who has understood the opposing argument better than the person making it, and the cost of that faculty is that the scales genuinely do balance.
When it is working, and when it is not
Working
The best mediator on the wheel, and not by being neutral — by making both sides feel accurately understood, which is the part that actually resolves things. There is real aesthetic judgement here and a genuine, unfashionable commitment to fairness: Libra will argue for the absent party, at its own expense, and will not mention doing it.
Not working
Peace bought at a price that is not disclosed until much later. Agreement given to end the discomfort, resentment stored rather than raised, and a self so thoroughly shaped around the other person that nobody — including Libra — can now say what it wants. Charm used as a way of not being known.

Where Libra actually is

Libra is the only constellation of the zodiac that is not a living thing, and it is the newest. To Greek and Babylonian observers these stars were not scales at all — they were the claws of the scorpion next door.
The names never changed. Zubenelgenubi is Arabic for “the southern claw” and Zubeneschamali for “the northern claw”, and both are still the official star names today, attached to a constellation that has not been a scorpion for two thousand years. It is the most literal fossil in the sky.
The scales themselves are a Roman idea. The autumn equinox sat here when the figure was reassigned, and the balance of day and night is the image being made — a sign named for what the Sun was doing rather than for what the stars looked like.
Zubeneschamali is the one to look at. Observers have described it as faintly greenish for centuries, and it is the star most often cited for that; the visual system does not normally produce green stars, and no one has settled whether it is a real effect of the star's spectrum or a trick of contrast with red Antares nearby.

The emotional weather tracks the state of the connection. Discord is felt physically here, and a Libra Moon will resolve it faster than is good for it, agreeing to things that are then quietly resented. Peace and comfort are not distinguished until much later.
Libra rising
You are met as pleasant, considered and accommodating — which is the most effective way there is of not being met at all. People consistently describe you as lovely and cannot say much else, and that is a defence, not an accident.

Aries, the opposite, is the argument between moving and agreeing — and it is the axis most likely to attract each other on sight and exhaust each other by month four.
