The shape of the sign
Leo is the only sign ruled by the Sun, and the Sun is the one body in the chart that everything else is measured against. That is the whole sign: not vanity, but centrality — the working assumption that being at the middle of something is a natural state rather than an imposition.
It is fixed fire, which is a strange combination and produces a very particular texture. Aries burns and moves on; Leo burns and stays. That is what makes it the sign of sustained creative effort, of the thing made over years rather than in an afternoon, and also what makes a Leo grudge so durable.
The need for a witness is the part most often described uncharitably, and it is worth being accurate about. Leo does not need applause; it needs the work to have landed on somebody. An effort nobody saw registers here as an effort that did not happen — which is not narcissism so much as a different theory of what makes something real.
Its fifth-house territory is play, romance, children, performance: everything done for its own sake rather than for a return. Leo is the sign that takes fun seriously, and it is genuinely offended by people who treat generosity as naive.
When it is working, and when it is not
Working
Warm at a scale other signs cannot sustain. A Leo in good form makes the people around it larger rather than smaller — introduces you at your best, credits you in public, spends its own standing on somebody who has none. It is loyal in the fixed way, which means loyal past the point where loyalty is convenient.
Not working
The room has to be about it, and stops being fun. Generosity acquires an invoice. Criticism, however small, is heard as a verdict on the whole person and is answered at full volume or with a silence lasting months. Pride prevents the apology that would end it in ten seconds.

Where Leo actually is

Leo is one of the few constellations that genuinely resembles the animal. The head and mane are the Sickle, a backwards question mark of six stars, and the body runs east from it to a bright triangle at the tail. Once seen it cannot be unseen.
Regulus sits at the base of the Sickle, a first-magnitude blue-white star about 79 light years away. Its name means “little king”, and it is one of the four Royal Stars of Persian astronomy. It also spins so fast — a full rotation in well under a day — that it is visibly flattened, bulging at its equator.
It sits closer to the ecliptic than any other first-magnitude star: within half a degree. That is why the Moon passes in front of it regularly, why the planets skim it, and why it appears in observation records going back thousands of years while brighter stars further from the Sun's path do not.
Denebola, at the tail, is the Arabic for exactly that — the lion's tail. And every November the Leonid meteors appear to stream out of the Sickle, which has nothing to do with the stars: it is the Earth ploughing through debris left by a comet, in a direction that happens to point at Leo.

Feeling wants to be met at its own size. A Leo Moon takes a flat response as a rejection, needs affection stated rather than assumed, and is more generous with reassurance than almost anyone, partly because it knows exactly what the absence of it costs.

You are met as someone the room has already registered. That is rarely neutral: it opens doors and it means an off day is public, and there is no version of this rising sign that gets to be inconspicuous.
